Why the Memory Matters Foundation was set up

The Memory Matters Foundation was established as a separate charitable entity in Plymouth, UK, in September 2019 by the team behind Memory Matters and Moments Café. The primary reasons for setting up the foundation were to:

  • Create a transparent fundraising pathway: This allows for dedicated efforts to raise awareness and funds to support individuals affected by dementia and other long-term conditions in the local community.

  • Build upon community needs: The foundation aims to address the specific needs expressed by people living with dementia and those who support them. The Charity aims to provide services that are built on the lived experience of carers and those affected by Dementia.

  • Secure the future of services: By establishing a separate charity, the long-term provision of advice, support, and education for those affected by dementia can be better sustained and free at the point of use.

  • Increase public awareness: A key goal is to raise awareness about dementia within the wider community. To reduce the stigma of the disease and to champion living well with dementia for all those affected.

In essence, the Memory Matters Foundation was set up to enhance the support available to people affected by dementia in the Plymouth area through focused fundraising and by ensuring the continuation and expansion of vital services.
