Henry’s Story
As part of our Making Every Memory Matter Together campaign, which aims to raise awareness about dementia and its signs, promote early detection, and foster community support, we would like to share Harry’s story with you.
We understand that living with dementia can be challenging, yet it also shapes fascinating narratives that are often filled with wisdom, resilience, and insight. Here, Harry gives us a short story about his dementia diagnosis, along with some of his recent experiences, thoughts, and feelings.
Hello, I'm Henry, I'm 81, and I have been diagnosed with Vascular dementia.
My first worrying signs that I may have dementia were when I started to suffer from regular forgetfulness and found myself getting confused more often than I would expect with aging.
I continue to remain positive and live an active and full life. I enjoy the company of others whom I can share a funny story or two with. I particularly enjoy going to the Memory Matters hub as its filled with friendship and laughter. It is also a very sociable activity where you can chat with others who understand the complexities of dementia.
We take part in quizzes and games, and have conversations that are always upbeat and positive. I would highly recommend it to anyone navigating their way around a dementia diagnosis.
My words of advice to anyone affected by dementia are to stay active and don't give up!
We would like to thank Henry for his kind words and encourage anyone affected by Dementia to get in touch and write their story. Often, it can be a meaningful way to reflect on your journey, celebrate your strengths, and perhaps offer guidance to others. There is no right or wrong way to share your experiences, and you can choose to write as much or as little as you prefer.
